Housed in a deconsecrated church, Gallerie dell'Accademia is Venice's main picture gallery, home to the most comprehensive collection of Venetian paintings in the world and a must-see for any visitor.

The collection is chronologically displayed from the 13th through to the 18th centuries, revealing the development of the city and the progression of its arts in the past 500 years. Expect to see major works by Old Masters, including Tempest by Bellini and Feast in the House of Levi by Veronese - two of the gallery's highlights. Giorgione, Carpaccio, Tiziano, Tintoretto and Tiepolo also feature among many others.

Due to safety reasons, entry is limited to a small number of people at a time, resulting in some off-putting queues during peak hours, so plan your visit.
