The supreme merit of Cafe Cabiria, other than its particularly delicious brew of the ubiquitous sangria, is its location. Set on the Piazza Santo Spirito, its customers spill out into the square on summer evenings and marvel at the church that towers over its end.

Built to the design of Brunelleschi, one of the most celebrated of Florence's home-grown artchitects and creator of the dome of the Duomo, the church's austere, classical, southern facade is inspiring - particularly if the alcohol consumption has been a little over-liberal. It also has very useful rows of steps bordering its flanks, should remaining upright become a problem.

If you feel the need to go inside, or the weather is bad, Cafe Cabiria has a very nice back room, complete with chandeliers, if you can survive the crowds along the corridor in-between. It is open all day, and DJs play from 9pm.
