The home of Italian ski champion Alberto Tomba, Siestriere has been considered a highly fashionable winter resort. It was purpose-built in 1930 by Giovanni Agnelli, the founder of the Fiat company, so that his family could ski near to their home. The modern village is compact and has distinctive architectural landmarks in the form of two twin towers. The resort is particularly popular with Italian families, but it holds good appeal for singles and groups as well. It will also be the main venue for the 2006 Winter Olympics, following its successful hosting of the 1997 Alpine Skiing World Championships. The impending Olympics have prompted superb infrastructure and leisure improvements.
On the snow, Sestriere forms a key part of the Milky Way, or the Via Lattea, resort network. This is an extensive network of 92 lifts and 400km of piste, linking five principal Italian resorts with the French border town of Montgenèvre. This system is deally suited to intermediates and above. It also offers excellent snow-sure conditions, and when combined with the 900 snow cannons and breath-taking sunshine, gives good conditions for both skiing and snowboarding.
