The Vittorio Emanuele Gallery has a 19th-century atmosphere, enhanced by the elegance of some of Milan's finest stores. This is the Galleria par excellence, and has been Milan's largest and most popular rendezvous for over a century.
The arcade was designed by architect Giuseppe Mengoni and built between 1865 and 1877. It has the shape of a cross with an octagon of iron and glass in the middle, reaching a height of 47 metres in its central dome. The gallery houses restaurants, bars, cafes, silversmiths and clothing shops, as well as some of the city's best bookstores, including Bocca, Garzanti and Rizzoli.
