The origins of Rome's Orto Botanico strecth back to the late 13th century, when the area was used for the cultivation of medicinal plants. In 1883 it was transformed into a botanical garden containing more than 3500 cultivated species.
Today it's possible to admire even a bigger variety of species in their own climates and ecosystems. Particularly noteworthy is the 400 year-old plane tree, one of the oldest in Rome. The bamboo collection is among the most significant in Europe, and the Garden of Fragrances is a section specially-created for the blind, featuring plants that can be appreciated through touch and smell.
