What would it be like to wake in the heart of the Roman Empire, lunch in a sumptuous 16th-century Renaissance villa, and go to bed in the capital of 21st-century designer chic? Visit Italy, taking in Rome, Florence and Milan, and the experience is yours.

But thats not all. Italy combines art history and contemporary fashion with stunning natural landscapes: the turquoise waters of the Costa Smeralda offer one of Europes most beautiful stretches of sand, sea and sunshine, while the snow-covered slopes of the Dolomite mountains are a haven for winter sports enthusiasts.

Besides the renowned cities of Venice, Genoa and Naples (each with its own unique identity Italy was only unified in 1870), there are romantic Medieval hill towns, such as San Gimignano in Tuscany, and unspoilt fishing villages, like the unforgettable Positano on the Amalfi coast. Visit vineyards and cellars to taste the very best regional wines: the Veneto, famed for the sparkling white prosecco, and Tuscany, home of the highly acclaimed robust red, Brunello di Montalcino. And to really get away from it all, take a boat to the islands of Sicily or Sardinia to experience rural hospitality in the blissful Mediterranean. Italy: still so much more to discover.
  • Teatro Verdi
One of the main centres of cultural life in a city that lives and breathes culture, the Teatro Verdi hosts ballet and theatre performances, concerts, opera and a wide range of related activities, such as seminars, lectures and workshops, for 300 days a year.
  • Lake Garda (Lago di Garda)
The largest and possibly the cleanest of the Italian lakes, Lago di Garda is also probably the most popular. But not without good reason - the gentle climate, citrus spirits and more than palatable wines do help to make it so. Even DH Lawrence was inspired to scribble Twilight in Italy because of the waters and surrounding features.
  • DocksDora
The DocksDora, a former industrial plant along the railway line to Milan, hosts a cluster of clubs and art venues and is a popular centre of Turin's nightlife. Among the clubs found here are the Dock's Home, Café Blue, Bar Code and "alternative" club Magazzini Reddocks. The loudspeakers are most likely to be thundering with house music, but occasionally the DJs opt for some softer indie and R&B.
  • Lace Museum - Museo del Merletto
The ancient craft of lace and embroidery, practiced by Venetian specialists for centuries, experienced a bit of a revival in 1978 thanks to the establismment of this museum on the site of an old school of lacemaking.
  • Camellias in the Boboli Gardens
This major Camellia collection is held in the spectacular Boboli gardens, which were designed for the Medici family after they bought Palazzo Pitti in 1549.
