Description
Venue: Teatro di San Carlo When: Daily
Teatro San Carlo, the oldest working theatre in Europe, attracts orchestras, performers and troupes from all over the world. The theatre was built in 1737 and, barring the reconstruction and a two-year economic crisis from 1872 to 1874, has not interrupted its seasons once in almost three centuries since then.
Naples was at one point the unquestioned musical capital of Europe, to the point where a performance at the San Carlo was the career ambition of maestros like Bach and Haydn and the climax to many careers.
Today the San Carlo is bustling with activity. Besides staging frequent operas, ballets and concerts, it is also involved in several projects, including an extended project to reintroduce operatic masterpieces from the 19th century and the ongoing attempt to restore the 18th century opera buffa, bringing it into the present. These cultural initiatives are made possible by the strong reputation the theatre has established internationally, as well as the enthusiasm it inspires in performers and guests alike.
The theatre's website provides plenty of material on its architectural and artistic history, as well as allowing you to download footage from past performances.
The theatre is open for guided tours, except when performances and rehearsals are in progress.
