Crete

Crete, according to Classical mythology, was the legendary setting for the most infamous labyrinth of all time and home to a solitary half-man, half-bull monstrosity known as the 'Minotaur'. As well as the doomed mongrel the island can lay claim to such mythological luminaries as Zeus and Icarus. The King of the Gods, according to legend, was born and raised in a cave on Crete and Icarus, who as I'm sure you remember flew too close to the sun and melted his wax wings, was the son of Daedalus who built the labyrinth for King Minos.

I think it's safe to say that Crete has more than its fair share of history. In fact, some of the relics uncovered on the island date back as far as 6000BC. The Scottish writer Hector Hugh Munro, better known as Saki once said: 'The people of Crete unfortunately make more history than they can consume locally' but it's fortunate for the rest of us because it means that they're willing to share it with the rest of the world. Just so long as we don't all come at once.

  • Palace of Knossos
The Palace of Knossos is the oldest settlement yet found which belonged to the Minoan civilisation and was excavated in the early 20th century. It is the place where the fabled minotaur of Ancient Greek myth is said to have lived, in a labyrinth in the gardens of King Minos, and one of the must-see ancient sites in Greece.
