Cologne's Roman-German Museum is home to an astounding collection of historic relics and cultural artefacts dating back to Roman times and the early Middle Ages, and is one of the most famous in Germany.
The Roman Empire gave rise to a wide range of architecture, inscriptions, portraits, ceramics and mosaics that now take pride of place in the museum. Highlights include an intricate Roman mosaic depicting scenes from the world of Dionysos (220 AD) and the reconstructed tomb of the legionary Poblicius (40 AD).
The museum also features a vast array of intriguing exhibits that span a period from prehistoric times to the early Middle Ages. These include the world's largest collection of Roman glass vessels, elaborate pieces of Roman and early medieval jewellery and the Mikwe - an intact orginal stone bath from the medieval Jewish community.
