Undoubtedly one of Germany's finest museums, the Deutsches Museum in Munich traces the development of science and technology from its origins to the present day.
Founded by the engineer Oskar von Miller in 1903, the museum is not only one of the largest in the world, but also one of the most popular, with over 1.3 million visitors a year. It offers 50 exhibitions, covering a huge range of subjects and all aimed at making scientific develpments accessible to the public.
Highlights include the recreation of coal mining conditions, the astronomy exhibition (which includes an observatory, a Planetarium and a solar telescope), a collection of musical instruments from throughout the ages and a kids' corner, dedicated to bringing science to the young. By 2005, the museum's lastest project and biggest undertaking will be completed - a transport museum within the listed buildings on the site.
