Stuttgart's new architectural masterpiece, the Kunstmuseum opened in March 2005. An ethereal glass cube conceived by the Berlin architects Rainer Hascher and Sebastian Jehle, it houses the municipal art collection.
The collection is built around four main themes: Swabian Impressionists, Adolf Hölzel and his circle, Otto Dix and contemporary regional art. The museum also houses works by regional artists such as Joseph Kosuth, Dieter Krieg and Markus Lüpertz. The most recent additions are concrete art works from the Teufel collection and the Otto Dix collection is one of the most extensive in the world.
Ingeniously, the architects have converted the old traffic tunnels that run under the museum, turning them into independent exhibition spaces. A glass-fronted facade means that each floor provides incomparable views over the Schlossplatz, new Schloss and old Schloss.
After a packed cultural morning, give in to your appetite at the museum's very own restaurant, situated on the top floor. Along with spectacular views, it serves traditional Swabian and international cuisine in a beautifully light, airy setting.
