The City of Lyon and Mission Pentes-Croix Rousse have now signposted each of the hidden Traboules entrances, so that visitors can explore the secret passageways linking the slopes of the beautiful Croix-Rousse district, a World Heritage Site, located midway between the Saône and Rhône rivers.
Traboules are the covered passageways that allowed Lyon's silk weavers to scurry from place to place without damaging their precious cargo, and members of the Résistance to move unseen.
Following the signposts, depart from the Gros Cailloux (big rock) near to the place de la Croix-Rousse and Place des Terreaux and follow the path marked Parcours des Voraces. Climb up, winding your way through the traboules and the interior courtyards with their tall towers, a distinctive part of Lyon's architecture.
