  • Basilique de Notre Dame de la Garde
Set on the highest point of the city, the 19th-century Basilique de Notre Dame de la Garde offers panaromic views of the old port of Marseille. It was commissioned by Napoleon III as part of a rebuilding programme encompassing the entire city during the Second Empire.
  • Chateau d'If
Rising formidably up from the tiny island of If, the solitary Chateau d'If was home to Marseille's treacherous and unwanted until 1890, when it opened to the public.
  • Centre de la Vieille Charité
Le Centre de la Vieille Charité was built as a result of a 1640 royal edict calling for "the poor" to be housed. Today, however, it ranks as one of Marseille's main cultural centres, housing the Museum of Mediterranean Archaelogy, as well as the Museum of African, Oceanic and American Indian Arts, exhibition spaces, an International Centre for Poetry, the prestigious School for Higher Studies in the Social Sciences, a cinema, bookshop and café.
  • Friday Night Skate
On the first Friday of every month, 1200 inline skaters gather in the place de la Liberté in Toulon's centre, then promenade through the city's streets and the surrounding area.
  • Carpentras Provençal Market
Carpentras has been a market town since the Romans titled the town Forum Neronis when it became an economic crossroads. This weekly market of fruit, vegetables, cheeses and local specialities sees the tradition continue unbroken.
