For a glimpse of stockinged leg and plenty of glitter in a historic setting, visit the Moulin Rouge, on the seedy Boulevard de Clichy. Although this venue has been going strong for over 100 years, the release of Baz Luhrmann's film Moulin Rouge in 2001 has aroused fresh interest in French cabaret.
The current show is Féerie, choreographed by Bill Goodson and sparkling with 60 dancers decked out in 1000 different combinations of feathers, rhinestones and sequins. There are four acts: The Moulin Rouge Forever; Sandokan Love Story; the Circus and Moulin Rouge From 1900 to the present day. Costumes are by Corrado Colabucci, music by Pierre Porte and lyrics by Charles Level.
Formal attire is required for the Moulin Rouge and the organisers request that you turn up half an hour prior to the show. Afterwards, you may want to be careful about where you go. Pretty much next door to the Moulin Rouge are an assortment of ultra seedy rip-off strip clubs which should be avoided at all costs.
