The Loire Valley is a beautiful place, steeped in history and tradition. Much of this history manifests itself through the numerous chteaux that are dotted about the valley, one of the most beautiful being the Chteau de Chenonceau. This is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, with a ballroom which straddles the Cher River. The Loire also has some marvellous wines, and it achieves greatness with the sweet wines of Vouvray, Coteaux du Layon, Bonnezeaux and Quarts de Chaume.

  • Morvan Resistance Museum
Morvan regional park, now a place of relaxation for joggers, boaters and walkers, provided welcome cover for the French Resistance and Maquisards during the Second World War. The Morvan Resistance Museum explores the role of the local community leaders and the British during this difficult time, with photographs, uniforms, weaponry, propaganda and even poetry.
  • Botanical Gardens
Dijon's botanical gardens were founded in 1833, in the Jardin de L'Arquebuse, for the cultivation, study and protection of plants and flowers from the region and all over the globe. The formal gardens offer some 3500 varieties, including a fragrant medicinal garden, to discover.
  • Bareuzai Market
Dijon's indoor and outdoor market clusters around the central Place Bareuzai. It's the best place in town to gossip with the locals, purchase fresh produce and get to know the region's gastronomy.
  • Amboise Market
This twice-weekly market takes place in the Place du Marchée beside the Loire river in the town of Amboise. Local wine, cheese, meat, fruit and vegeetables are on sale, along with clothes and locally-made pottery.
