Its hard to generalise about France as Charles de Gaulle once remarked, how could one describe a country which has 365 kinds of cheese? Yet there is something about this magnificent land which draws millions of francophiles back year after year for a taste of la vie française.

Could it be the chic boulevards of Paris, the sparkling ski slopes of the Alps, sunlit vineyards and sun-baked beaches, a dusty game of boules, or coffee and croissants in an undiscovered village? Or perhaps its a tour of the majestic châteaux of the Loire that appeals, the glamorous jet-set lifestyle of the Mediterranean, or a relaxing picnic in Provence, where the air is fragrant with wild herbs and lavender? Consider also the delights of other lesser-known regions such as Franche-Comté, Gascony or Berry, deep in the green heart of France regions firmly rooted to the land, whose sleepy villages offer visitors a chance to sample the true douceur de vivre of provincial France.

There is no denying that France is a land of great contrasts, offering an endless choice of enticing destinations, a rich diversity of landscapes, cuisines, climates and peoples, with an exceptional cultural heritage. Its easy to see why the French stay at home for their holidays and why they so felicitously call their country La Belle France.

  • Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel
Known by the French simply as La Merveille (The Marvel) this 13th-century abbey is an architectural wonder in its own right. The fact that it is perched on a rock several kilometres off the French coast makes it utterly unique.
  • Eiffel Tower
Visible from vantage points all over the city, the looming iron-work structure of the Eiffel Tower dominates the Paris skyline and offers increasingly spectacular views from its three storeys. Its twinkling lights, a legacy of the Parisian millennium celebrations, have remained thanks to popular demand - making it even more of a glittering attraction.
  • Lavinia
Lavinia is Europe's largest wine and spirits store, with a deadly choice of 1000 spirits and 2000 wines from 43 countries, including 3000 French wines. Founders Thierry Servant and Pascal Chevrot have chosen to open their biggest venture yet in Paris, after testing the water with smaller stores in Madrid and Barcelona.
  • Père Lachaise Cemetery
The tombs of celebrated singers, writers, artists, statesmen and revolutionaries can be found among the thousands buried in the pleasantly sprawling, leafy Paris cemetery - Cimetière du Père Lachaise. A modern-day mecca, it is reputedly the world's most-visited cemetery, with tombs ranging from the ludicrous and ostentatious to the understatedly simple.
  • Louvre
The Louvre, palace of kings, architectural centrepiece of the French capital and one of the top five museums in the world, is unmissable.
