Description

Venue: Palais Rohan    When: Daily; Wed only

The wealth of Bordeaux is symbolised in its grand Town Hall, known as the Palais Rohan, prominently located on the Place Pey-Berland.

The building owes its name to Ferdinand-Maximilien Mériadec de Rohan. Elected Archbishop in 1771, he immediately undertook the reconstruction of the outmoded medieval building. The sumptuous new palace was completed in 1784.

Despite numerous modifications, the interior of the palace has conserved its sweeping staircase, known as the Escalier d'honneur. Other highlights include the finely proportioned grand salon and a dining room decorated with trompe-l'œil paintings, a feature added by Pierre Lacour in 1802.

The Tourist Office organises guided tours of the building every Wednesday. Although in French only, seize this opportunity of visiting the ornate interior of the palace.
