- Augusta Raurica
In its heyday, 1800 years ago, 20,000 people lived in the Roman town of Augusta Raurica, 15km from Basle. Many of the traces left behind by the native Celtic inhabitants and the Roman conquerors have now been excavated and are accessible to the public in the largest open-air archaeological museum in north-west Switzerland.
- Atomium
The Atomium, a giant model of the atomic lattice of iron crystals (magnified 165 million times), was built for the 1958 World Fair by engineer André Waterkeyn in celebration of scientific progress, and is a distinctive and quirky landmark in Brussels.
- Olympic Museum
As the seat of the Olympic Committee, Lausanne is home to this high-tech museum celebrating sporting achievements through the ages. A multimedia affair with a wealth of rare and fascinating items on show (Carl Lewis' shoe from the 1984 Olympics, for instance), the museum also boasts a massive collection of historical footage.
- Manneken-Pis
This bizarre little statue is the most popular tourist attraction in Brussels. Famously touted as a glorious example of Belgian humour and capacity for self-mockery, there remains something ridiculous about the elevation of a small, peeing boy to the status of cultural icon.
- Belgian Centre of Comic Strip Art
The Belgian Centre of Comic Strip Art is dedicated to the nation's great love of the cartoon, and celebrates artists such as Georges Remi, otherwise known as Herge, the creator of one of the most famous comic book series - Tintin.
