Description
Venue: Lokrum Island When: Daily
Dubrovnik is rich in both history and culture, offering much for the curious visitor. It is also well positioned on the so-called "Dubrovnik Riviera", with plenty of great beaches. One of the highlights is Lokrum Island, a pleasant ten-minute sail from the old city harbour.
The island is a natural resort protected by the Croatian Academy of Art and Science and is as popular today as it has been since the Middle Ages. In addition to the beaches, the island boasts a botanic garden with tropical and subtropical plants. Perched on the island's highest point is Fort Royal, built in a shape of a five-pointed star by the French army in 1806. Those with the energy to climb up to the fort are rewarded with magnificent views of Dubrovnik, Cavtat and the island itself.
Easily reached by walkways is the old Benedictine monastery, now a restaurant and café bar for tired and thirsty visitors. Another great attraction is a small lake linked to the open sea called Mrtvo More, or the Dead Sea, especially popular with families as it provides a very safe place to swim.
