Dubrovnik's 14th-century Dominican Monastery, in the Old Town, hosts some of the best paintings by Dubrovnik's 15th- and 16th-century artists, as well as sculptures, golden ware and historical manuscripts.
Paintings on display include the 15th-century Crucifixion by Paolo Veneziano, Virgin Mary and St. John by Lorenzo di Marino Dobrièeviæ, Miracle of St. Dominic by Vlaho Bukovac, and two altarpieces by Francesco di Maria.
Built in the 14th century, the fortress-like monastery is located on the eastern side of the Old Town, just next to the city walls. The monastery's church features a Romanesque portal with Gothic ornaments, and the cloister, planned by Maso di Bartolomeo of Florence, is one of the most beautiful pre-Renaissance cloisters in Dalmatia.
The Dominican Library hosts 16,000 volumes, 240 incunabula and important archives, and was one of the biggest European libraries in the period between the 15th and 17th century and was one of the biggest libraries of the Renaissance.
