Hillsides cloaked in forestry run right to the water’s edge and along a thousand miles of shore, a thousand tiny islands are sprinkled in a sapphire sea. A superbly scenic coastal road runs from Dubrovnik north to Zadar, turning inland before returning to the sea to encircle the Istrian peninsula. A hire car is a real bonus for discovery here. Good regular ferry services link the mainland port to their outlaying islands. Simply collect and return your vehicle at the airport.
