Antwerp is a fascinating european maritime city known for its superb architecture and art. Sights not to be missed include the National Maritime Museum (Antwerp is a historic port on the River Scheldt) located in a waterfront castle, containing splendid model ships and antique maps, the Rubenshuis (where the famous 17th-century Flemish painter Pieter Paul Rubens lived), the Museum Plantin-Moretus (a printing works dating from the 17th century), and the Gothic cathedral. A visit to the Royal Museum of Fine Art is a must. Magnificent paintings by old flemish masters, including Rubens, Van Dyck, and others are to be found here. Antwerp is also well known for its nightlife with more than 2,000 watering holes catering for all tastes-from modern bars to old Flemish taverns.
