Located in the heart of Austrias skiing, just a short distance from Innsbruck and the Italian border, Igls is a wonderful traditional Tyrolean village. It remains compact and unspoilt, with sedate hotels, fine coffee houses and many picturesque woodland walks. It is also home to a spectacular Olympic bob-run, now open to the public, and to many horse-drawn sleighs. The local restaurants offer hearty Austrian fare including fondue, wild boar and sticky strudels. Regular Tyrolean music and dancing nights are popular.
The skiing itself is varied, with access to the extensive Innsbruck region. Beginners and the more timid have two nursery slopes a short distance from the village centre. Fearless experts can always try the resorts greatest challenge - its Olympic downhill run. Most pistes are maintained by a degree of snow-making, which usually ensures skiing well into the Spring. After hitting the slopes, nightlife is a little more restrained, but a handful of convivial watering holes are lively.
