Description
Venue: Xel-Ha When: Daily
With its never-ending network of interconnected lagoons, natural pools, creeks, islands and caves, the tropical water park of Xel-Ha will enchant all water-babies. Less keen swimmers, meanwhile, cannot fail to be bowled over by the park's natural beauty.
Set in the middle of a lush green forest, Xel-Ha offers a way of discovering the Yucatan Peninsula's water landscape in a controlled setting and so avoiding the risks of the strong currents common to the coastal stretches. The site centres around a star-shaped, opal green lagoon the size of a football pitch, where swimmers and snorkellers can freely explore surrounding inlets and islands.
The real beauty spots can be found further out, by losing yourself on one of the park's many jungle trails that lead to secluded sun lounging spots along the coast, hidden creeks and tiny pools. Here the crowds almost disappear and iguanas freely criss-cross the paths. Be sure to cross The Floating Bridge, which is built on the water and moves to the rhythm of the choppy waves as giant fish swarm beneath.
For non-swimmers, as well as the scenic trails and lounging spots, there is also a natural aquarium. Visitors have the option to experience swimming with dolphins, although there is an extra charge for this.
Buses and coaches leave regularly for Xel-Ha from Cancun and, being so near to Tulum, it is perhaps worth combining a visit to both.
