Description
Venue: Tulum When: Daily
Tulum, or the "City of Dawn", is the Yucatan Peninsula's most popular Mayan archaeological site, and deservedly so. Clamber through the narrow stone arch entrance and the ruins of an entire city greet you.
Objects excavated on the site have shown that the city was a prosperous centre of trade from the 13th century up until the beginning of the 16th. During this time it was also a ceremonial ground dedicated to the worship of the Descending God, whose image is carved on most of the city's temples. Most of the ruins lie on two intersecting axes as was the custom and, as so many have survived, convey a powerful impression of what the city must have been like in its former glory.
For reasons of defence, the city was built on a cliff and looks out to sea. Although warring neighbours have long disappeared, the combination of commandeering stone ruins and the oceanic landscape is magnificent. Behind El Castillo, Tulum's main temple, you can scramble down to the cove below and cool off with a quick dip in the Caribbean.
The earlier in the day you get there, however, the better, for as the afternoon progresses the site gets increasingly crowded.
