Description

Venue: El Garrafón    When: Daily

The word paradise springs to mind on entering the stunning Garrafón Natural Park, situated on the edge of a cliff overlooking transparent turquoise waters.

El Garrafón's main attraction is its coral reef which, only a few metres out from the shore, is ideal for first-time snorkellers. Due to the disturbance caused by them over the years, the fauna below is not out of this world, although multicoloured shoals of tropical fish can still be spotted.

Above water, the sweeping picture-book vistas of the jagged coastline are breathtaking. Terraces are dotted along the coast where visitors can easily while away a lazy day. Be sure to walk along the sea-facing path, where you will be sprayed as waves crash against the shore. There are also hiking trails and a restaurant and bar.

The park crowns the southern tip of the picturesque Isla Mujeres or the Island of Women. An hour's boat trip from Cancun, it seems much further away from the busy mainland. The pace is more visibly laid-back and despite its increasing popularity the island retains something of its original beatnik charm.
