The third-largest city on the island, Puerto Plata is more a working town than a resort. There is plenty of local history to be seen, including Torre Isabella Mountain. There are a few souvenir shops but better shopping can be found in nearby Playa Dorada. There is a scattering of local restaurants but most restaurants and entertainment are hotel-based.
