La Romana sits at the southeastern end of the island, 10 miles from Bayahibe. A provincial coastal town with colourful clapboard houses, this is the hub of the country's sugar production. Whilst the resort does have sandy beaches, better ones can be found at Bayahibe. There are a handful of bars and discos in the town, and a more varied and lively nightlife can be enjoyed at nearby Casa de Campo.
