Queenstown, self proclaimed adventure capital of the world, has without doubt earned its title. Birthplace of the bungee jump, everything from luge, jet-boating and hang-gliding to - of course - bungeeing or "simply" abseiling is on offer to the visitor. All activities take place either at the town or a few minutes' drive away. Set in an exquisite setting on the edge of giant Lake Wakatipu, and full of bars and restaurants, it has to be your top destination in the whole of South Island.
A ski-resort during the winter, you can take a cable car from the town edge to the mountain-top for a fantastic view of the town and surrounding area at any time of year. There is a great view of the glorious mountain-range, The Remarkables, stretching along the south-side of the lake -so called because of the "remarkable" light effects that play across their slopes. In the summer they can go every colour from mauve to deep red as the sun goes down (sunset from the lake-banks is another major Queenstown must-see) while in the winter, snow-covered, they are even better.
As well as the more energetic activities, you can take the old-fashioned ferry out on to the lake for a more relaxed trip.
Inside the town itself are plentiful bars and restaurants, cheap backpackers hotels, as well as smarter hotels (you pay a lot for a lake view). Tourist information is always readily at hand. The best - and smartest - restaurants are down on the lakeside itself - stroll along the pier and take your pick. Winnies or the Pig and Whistle are good for an all-round pub experience while nightlife after the pubs have shut (2am or 3am) can be found down Cow Lane, Camp St at the likes of the Taris Bar.
The more fashionable spots of Queenstown are better hidden - literally down dark alleyways and behind closed doors - although it's worth knocking on one if you figure you're following the right crowd.
