Terminals 1 and 2 are connected by the Millennium Link walkway.
The airport is situated on the A45 Coventry road, close to junction 6 of the M42. There are direct connections from the M1, M5, M6 and M40. The new M6 toll road provides a fast alternative to the M6. The airport is signposted from the motorways.
There is short- and long-term car parking at the airport. Parking information is available from NCP (tel: (0)870 606 7050; website: www.ncp.co.uk).
Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and National are represented in the Millennium Link.
Rail: The free Skyrail service links the airport directly to Birmingham International Train Station. A network of regional and intercity rail services depart from there, including a Virgin service to London Euston. Further information is available from National Rail (tel: (0)845 748 4950; website: www.nationalrail.co.uk). Road: Taxi: Black cabs (tel: (0)121 782 3744) carry up to five people with luggage. Bus: Local buses link the airport to the surrounding district. All buses stop outside the terminals. For timetable and fare information, call Traveline (tel: (0)870 608 2608). Coach: National Express (tel: (0)8705 808 080; website: www.nationalexpress.com) operates long-distance coach services, linking the airport to Birmingham and a number of other cities, and provides inter-airport Flightlink (tel: (0)8705 757 747) coaches linking the airport with London Luton, London Gatwick and London Stansted airports.
The airport information desk (tel: (0)870 733 5511) is situated in the Millennium Link; there is also an information point located in the Departures Lounge. British Airways operates a customer service desks (tel: (0)121 767 7502/3) in Terminal 2. The Visitor Centre in Terminal 1 provides a reservation and information service.
Money and communications: Bureaux de change and ATMs are available in both terminals. Postal facilities are available in Terminal 1. Eating and drinking: There is an extensive range of cafés, restaurants, bars and fast-food outlets both airside and landside. Shopping: There are several retail shops at the airport. Luggage: A left-luggage facility (tel: (0)121 767 7987) is available on the first floor in Terminal 1. Other facilities: There are 24-hour medical centres in both terminals and a prayer room.
Business booths are available in the Terminal 1 Departures lounge; free work stations are provided, with credit-card operated telephone, e-mail, modem and fax facilities. Air Space (tel: (0)121 767 8063) provides meeting rooms accommodating between two and 40 people. Overhead projectors and flipcharts are available.
Adapted toilets and lifts are provided. Wheelchairs are available on request. Help with baggage and check-in is available by contacting the airport information desk (tel: (0) 870 733 5511) prior to arrival. Wheelchair and other assistance after check-in must be arranged through the individual airlines. A Minicom system (tel: (0)121 767 8084) is installed at the Terminal 1 airport information desk, and there is an induction loop system.
The Crowne Plaza NEC (tel: (0)121 781 4000), Hilton Birmingham Metropole (tel: (0)121 780 4242), Holiday Inn Express NEC (tel: (0)121 782 3222) and Novotel Birmingham International Airport (tel: (0)121 782 4111) are all located near the airport. Expansion of the International Terminal and a revamp of the Domestic Terminal, which will focus on integration with the International Terminal (with convenient connections to facilities) are underway. The project is slated for completion in 2008.
There is internal access between the Domestic and International terminals, and there are domestic transfer check-in counters in the International Arrivals hall.
From the centre of Christchurch (Cathedral Square), take Columbo Street, and from there Bealey Street and Harper Avenue. Turn right onto Fendalton Avenue and continue to Hagley Park, turning into Memorial Avenue. The airport is located over the roundabout on Memorial Avenue.
Short- and long-term car parking spaces are located immediately in front of the terminal building, from where hire cars can also be collected.
Car hire companies are located in the International and Domestic Terminals. Avis, Budget, Hertz, Maui Rentals and Thrifty are all represented, although Thrifty is located in the Domestic Terminal only.
Road: Taxi: Taxis are available to the city centre (journey time: 15-20 minutes). Bus: A public bus service runs to the city centre (journey time: 30-40 minutes); shuttle buses can be shared and take travellers to their accommodation. Transport to Christchurch city centre is available outside the Domestic and International areas of the terminal building.
Travel and information centres are located in the Domestic Terminal and International Arrivals lounge. In addition to providing information and bookings for local accommodation, transport and sightseeing tours, the staff operate a full travel agency service and can cater for any further international or domestic travel and holiday arrangements. Postal services are available at the travel and information centres in both terminals. Telephones are situated throughout in both terminals. Eating and drinking: Bars, cafés and restaurants are located throughout the airport. Shopping: Shops, including duty-free, are located in International Arrivals (before customs), the International Departures lounge and the gallery boutiques on the first floor (passengers only); there are also shops in the Domestic Terminal. Luggage: A left-luggage service is available at the travel and information centres in the Domestic Terminal, and on the ground floor of the International Terminal (tel: (0)3 353 1985). Trolleys are available in both terminals. Other facilities: There is a hairdresser, florist and a pharmacy in the Domestic Terminal. There are children’s play areas on the first floor and in the Domestic Terminal. The visitor centre of New Zealand’s International Antarctic Centre is a five -minute walk from the terminal buildings.
The travel and information centres can provide fax, photocopying and postal facilities, as well as baggage storage. Conference and business facilities are also available within the airport complex at the International Antarctic Visitors Centre and the Sudima Hotel Grand Chancellor (tel: (0)3 358 3139; fax: (0)3 358 3029). Airline lounges are situated on the first floor of both terminals.
Facilities for travellers with special needs include lifts, automatic doors, wheelchair access, accessible toilets and showers, ATM machines with Braille keys and dedicated parking spaces at the front of the public car-parking area. Passengers requiring wheelchairs and special assistance should inform their airline prior to travel.
The Sudima Hotel Christchurch Airport (tel: (0)3 358 3139; website: www.sudimahotels.com) is a five-minute walk from the terminal building. The Copthorne Hotel Commodore (tel: (0)3 962 9850) and the Russley Hotel and Villas (tel: (0)3 358 6500; website: www.russleyhotel.co.nz) are located a few minutes’ drive from the airport. Staff at the airport travel and information centre can provide assistance with bookings and offer recommendations to suit travellers’ needs and budget.
