Description

Venue: The Opera House    When: Daily

Opened on Easter Saturday 1914, and originally known as the Grand Opera House, Wellington's Opera House was designed by Melbourne architect William Pitt and supervised by architect Albert Liddy.

At its opening it was one of the largest proscenium arch theatres of its kind in Australasia (when the stage is fronted by a large arch) and even now it can boast a bigger stage than either the Sydney Opera House or most of London's West End (bar two theatres)! As tradition would have it in an older theatre, it is also said to be the home for three ghosts.

The Opera House is used by touring dance and theatre companies, musicals, drama, community groups and pop concerts.
