Description
Venue: Laird Hotel When: Daily
The Laird Hotel is one of Melbourne's oldest hotels, built as the Laird O'Cockpen Hotel in 1847. Since 1980 it has been an exclusively gay venue, with something different happening on every night of the week.
The Laird has one of the longest consistent operating records for a gay hotel anywhere in the world. It is open seven nights a week and combines an industrial look with a cruising atmosphere, open fireplaces and a beer garden. It is the only hotel in Victoria to have been granted "Male Only" status by the Australian legal system in deference to its history and service to the gay community.
There are a number of one-off and monthly events, although regular nights include Monday's Soul Night, with soul and R&B music, Wednesday's retro night with Seventies, Eighties and Nineties music and the mega-popular Friday and Saturday nights with resident DJs and both bars and the beer garden open to all. Needless to say, Sunday night is the weekend recovery session.
In addition there are regular monthly club nights catering for all tastes in three bars - the Nugget bar, the back bar and the bar that serves the beer garden.
