Kangaroo Island, off the south coast of Australia, is one of nature's goldmines, with an abundance of spectacular attractions all within an hour of Adelaide. The island has benefitted from its remoteness and limited development, ensuring an abundance of wildlife, seldom found elsewhere, all living in a protected natural environment.
Some of the wildlife to be encountered includes dolphins, sea lions, penguins, wallabies, goannas, koalas, and of course kangaroos. This is a fantastic place for diving and snorkelling, and some choose to take a boat out for some serious deep-sea fishing. Others take advantage of one of the many guided tours on offer or simply enjoy the fantastic seafood.
The island is home to one of Australia's largest sea lion colonies. Seal Bay in Seal Bay Conservation Park is situated on the south coast and is home to a colony of wild Australian sea lions. This is one of the few places in the world where these animals are relatively tolerant of people and visitors are able to walk quite close to them providing they are undisturbed.
There's not much on the island that isn't part of a national park, but Flinders Chase National Park at the western end should not be missed. Stunning coastal landscapes, vast areas of wilderness and diversity of wildlife draw visitors who come to commune with nature. Campsites cater for those who want to really explore and there are plenty of walking tours on offer.
