Second only to Tokyo's Tsukiji Fish Market, Sydney's wholesale fish market on the harbour shoreline at Blackwattle Bay reflects Australia's status as a seafood nation. Get to the market early and you can take in some fast and furious bidding in the daily auction, plus wonderful fish bites and even some cookery classes.
The daily catch brings everything from Sydney rock oysters to whiting, lobster, bream, snapper, prawns and mud crab. The market even boasts catches of Canadian sea trout, Atlantic salmon (from farms off the Tasmanian coast) and Canadian rainbow trout.
The market is both wholesale and retail, with some 800 Australian and 105 overseas suppliers. The weekday auctions are frenetic, based on the "Dutch Clock System" which sees silent and speedy sales at premium prices (the opening high price is dropped on a digital counter until a bid is made).
Once the trading is over, visit some of the fish cafes, sushi bars and stalls around the market. If fish is really your passion, you can even book a cookery lesson or two at the Sydney Seafood School.
