Description

Venue: Glebe Market    When: Daily; Sat only

Visiting Glebe Market has established itself as one of the trendy Saturday activities in Sydney. The market is the haunt of cool Sydney-siders, who hang out round Glebe's cafés as well as Newtown slightly further out, with its crumbling student housing and wicked drag clubs. Everyone spends a leisurely Saturday chewing the cud, relaxing and checking the stalls, chock-full of second-hand clothes.

You need to be an experienced flea market shopper to really get a bargain, but it's definitely worthwhile delving amongst the racks. Australian clothes are well made and they last a long time. There is a vast array of 1960s shirts, some nice, some slightly decayed; also lace 1970s efforts and bootleg cords aplenty.

Particularly nice in the summer, Glebe Market takes place at a school and there is a sports field where you can chill out in-between bouts of hectic consumerism (with room for the kids to let off energy!).
