Description

Venue: Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo    When: Daily; not Mon

The Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo opened in 1995 and houses the foremost collection of post-war art in Japan. The museum itself is a sophisticated structure of grey marble, glass and steel in Metropolitan Kiba Park.

The permanent collection, housed in a series of light, airy galleries, focuses on Japanese art in relation to international developments, from the Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s, through Pop Art to Minimalism and beyond. The displays are both chronological and thematic, with rooms devoted to graphics and art from other Asian countries. Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney are all represented. The museum also presents a full programme of temporary exhibitions.
