Description

Venue: Ueno-koen Park    When: Daily

Ueno-koen Park in Tokyo is the perfect destination for strolling, museum-hopping and temple-gazing. The park is carefully landscaped and dotted with museums - the Tokyo National Museum, National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum - and temples as well as Ueno Zoological Gardens, Japan's oldest zoo.

Tokyo's first public park was opened in 1873. Sights to look out for include the statue of Takamori Saigo, erected in 1898, which is one of the best known monuments in Japan. The Kiyomizu Kannon-do Temple, built in 1631, is a famous religious structure dedicated to Kannon, the Shinto fertility goddess.

Other attractions amidst the cherry trees, resplendent in flower in spring, include the Tokyo National Museum, the National Science Museum, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Museum of Western Art, which is housed in a Le Corbusier building.
