Description

Venue: Imperial Palace    When: Daily

A highlight of any trip to Tokyo is a visit to the amazing Imperial Palace in the centre of this modern city.

The palace is home to Japan's Emperor and his family and stands on the site of the former Edo Castle. An amazing complex that covers a huge area, it is set in a large park surrounded by moats and towering stone walls. Visitors are limited to the serene East Gardens, apart from on 2 January (known as Ippan Sanga) and 23 December the Emperor's birthday, when the inner palace grounds are also opened.

The East Gardens are where Edo Castle's innermost circles of defense, the honmaru (main circle) and ninomaru (secondary circle) formerly stood. Today only the moats, walls, entrance gates and some guardhouses remain. The contrast of the old and the new is heightened by the palace itself. A reconstruction completed in 1968, after being destroyed in the Second World War, it stands warily amidst Tokyo's modern corporate buildings.
