Description

Venue: Gion District    When: Daily

First developed around the Gion-jinja Shrine area, the Gion District has blossomed into the beautiful centre of the arts in Kyoto. It is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During the Edo Period (1603-1868) theatres and playhouses were constructed in the Gion area for Kabuki and Ningyo-joruri. What began as a Chaya quarter (where maiko and geiko entertained their guests) in time became a centre of the theatrical and performing arts and developed into a Chaya-machi.

The Gion District is arguably the most aesthetically pleasing in Kyoto, blessed as it is with beautiful historic scenery including the Shirakawa River, stone pavements, cherry trees and rows upon rows of refined centuries-old traditional Kyoto-style houses.
