The Kiyomizudera temple is popular amongst Kyoto natives and a must-see for visitors. Kiyomizudera means "Temple of Pure Water," and the site attracts many young people who come to pray for success in finding a soulmate at the Shinto shrine inside the complex.

Built in 798 and set in picturesque hillside surroundings, the temple is a Kyoto landmark. The main hall is situated on a large wooden terrace, from which there are good views of the temple grounds, the pagoda and the city beyond.
