Description

Venue: San Thome Cathedral    When: Daily

San Thome derives its name from St Thomas, the apostle of Christ who is believed to have come to Madras in 52 AD. Some say he was killed on St Thomas Mount just outside the city in 78 AD, and his remains are apparently housed in the cathedral today.

In 1606 the church on this site was rebuilt as a cathedral and in 1896 it was made into a Basilica, with a beautiful stained glass window portraying the story of St Thomas. The central hall has 14 wooden plaques depicting scenes from the last days of Christ and there's also a statue of the Virgin Mary, believed to have been brought from Portugal in 1543.
