Description

Venue: Jama Masjid    When: Daily

The largest mosque in India, Delhi's Jama Masjid was originally called Masjid-i-Jahanuma, meaning "the mosque commanding a view of the world". It is the last architectural work of Shah Jahan and was begun in 1644, completed in 1658.

The mosque has three gateways with wide red sandstone steps, four towers and two minarets standing 40 metres high, built of alternating vertical strips of red sandstone and white marble. The eastern gateway used to be opened only for the Emperor, but is now open on Fridays and Muslim festivals. The impressive courtyard can hold up to 25,000 worshippers.
