Description

Venue: St Francis Church    When: Daily

Kochi's St Francis Church was built in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscan friars and is one of India's oldest European churches.

History has it that the church was initially built of timber and later reconstructed in stone masonry. It was restored in 1779 by the Protestant Dutch, but was converted into an Anglican church by the British in 1795. It is currently governed by the Church of South India. Vasco da Gama was buried here in 1524 for 14 years, before his remains were moved to Lisbon, Portugal. His tombstone still remains.

The rope-operated fans (punkahs) here are unusual and worth seeing. Sunday services are held in English and Malayalam.
