Description

Venue: Thrissur    When: Daily

Thrissur derives from the Malayalam word Thrissivaperur, meaning the "town of the Sacred Shiva". It is built on elevated ground, at the apex of which is the famous Vadakkunathan Temple, with its exquisite murals narrating the story of the epic Mahabharatha.

There are also two impressively large churches: Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral and the Puttanpalli Church, one of the tallest in Asia. The Cheraman Juma Masjid, constructed in AD 629, is famous as the first mosque built in India. On Museum Road, the Archaeological Museum has temple models, stone reliefs, Gandharan pieces and reproductions of some of the Mattancherry Murals.
