Description

Venue: Jantar Mantar    When: Daily

Commissioned by Emperor Muhammad Shah to correct the existing astronomical tables and fix planetary positions anew, Sawai Jai Singh II built the first stone observatory in Delhi in 1724 and Jaipur's Jantar Mantar in 1728.

Restored in 1901, the Jantar Mantar (next to the entrance of the City Palace) is the largest and best-preserved of the five observatories Sawai built. Every structure making up the building has a specific purpose, such as measuring the positions of the stars, or calculating eclipses. Don't miss the sundial with the 27-metre gnomon - the shadow it casts moves up to four metres an hour.
