You don't need to be a shopaholic to be drawn irresistibly to SOGO - Japan's largest department store, located bang in the centre of Hong Hong's buzzing Causeway Bay shopping area. SOGO Hong Kong sells everything from food to gifts, jewellery, fantastic fabrics and a mouthwatering stock of designer gear.

Quality and customer service is the company watchword: "to serve the local community, provide a wide range of high quality merchandise, and put the customer first".

The company began as a humble kimono retailer in Osaka in the 1830s before extending its presence in Japan to the three major cities - Tokyo, Osaka and Kobe. There are now 29 stores in Japan alone.

In case SOGO Hong Kong was a little staid for some, the group launched The New Face in November 1996 on East Point Road, just opposite the SOGO department store, now stocking fashion, sportswear, underwear, cosmetics and perfume and brand names such as Diesel and Selfridges.

SOGO has also extended its existing supermarket, The Supermart (underneath East Point Road) to below the Island Centre. It's a good bet for high quality, reasonably priced food.
