Cultural treasure-house of East Asia

Chinas cultural riches and 5000 years of tumultuous history place it, without doubt, among the worlds greatest travel destinations. The Great Wall, Xians Terracotta Army, the Forbidden Palace and Tiananmen Square: the very names reverberate with history and legend.

Chinas paradoxes are many: Shanghais skyscrapers contrast with Beijings historical treasures, while in rural provinces, mechanisation has not yet reached many traditional farming villages. Celebrated places and sights abound this is the land of the Yangxi River, the Silk Route and the bamboo forests of the panda. Spectacular Guilin brings the vistas of rivers and misty peaks in traditional ink paintings to life, while far to the west, the fabled Tibetan city of Lhasa beckons pilgrims to the roof of the world.

Chinese food from noodles to Imperial banquets ranks among the worlds great cuisines. From acrobatics to martial arts, calligraphy to Chinese opera, the vibrant, distinctive culture of this great land is everywhere to be seen.

Now reunited with the mainland, visually stunning Hong Kong offers a warp-speed shop till you drop lifestyle combined with enclaves of tradition and tranquil outlying islands. Nearby, exotic Macau is a gamblers paradise with colonial Portuguese flair.

Beijing, as the site of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games, is facing enormous investment, which will see its historic areas refurbished and protected, and transport and accommodation improved.

Chinas tourism infrastructure is rapidly improving, but flexibility and patience are still required. In return, China rewards visitors with memories to be treasured for a lifetime.

  • Tiananmen Square - Gate of Heavenly Peace
Set at the very heart of Beijing, in front of the Forbidden City, surrounded by important buildings of the Communist Party and with Chairman Mao's mausoleum standing at its centre, Tiananmen Square - Gate of Heavenly Peace - represents the core of both modern and ancient China.
  • Great Wall of China
The largest man-made construction ever built, the ancient majesty of the Great Wall of China can be spotted by anyone who happens to be journeying through space, although not, as is commonly believed, from the moon (Armstrong did try).
  • Lan Kwai Fong
Lan Kwai Fong is one of Hong Kong's hippest areas, home to an abundance of bars and restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. Here's where you'll find some of the best quality food and get to hang out in the most fashionable places. The best time to visit is Friday or Saturday night, when crowds spill out onto the street and create a good-natured party atmosphere.
  • Yiheyuan - The Summer Palace
Located 15km from Beijing, the Summer Palace is the largest imperial garden in China. Considered a paragon of Chinese architecture, the buildings blend harmoniously with the natural scenery along the shores of Kunming Lake.
  • Yu Yuan Garden
Once a private Ming dynasty garden, Yu Yuan (or Jade Garden) is typical of the careful elegance and optical brilliance favoured by the Chinese for classical gardens. The land is divided into six scenic areas - the Grand Rockery, the Ten Thousand-Flower Pavilion, the Hall of Heralding Spring, the Hall of Jade Magnificence, the Inner Garden, and the Lotus Pool.
