Covering a huge swathe of land, washed by the Atlantic and Indian oceans, South Africa has enormous wealth above and below ground, making it one of the richest natural storehouses on the planet. With staggeringly beautiful rural areas such as the Cape Winelands, the towering dunes of the Wild Coast, the magnificent game parks of Kruger and Zululand, and the Kalahari and Karoo deserts, barren for much of the year but a carpet of flowers in spring, the possibilities for tourists are endless. Alternatively, visit sophisticated cities such as Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town, or charming historic towns like Stellenbosch or Pietermaritzburg. Even once infamous townships such as Soweto are now growing into vibrant cities in their own right.

South Africa is a rainbow nation of many colours and cultures, encompassing Zulu, Tswana, Khosa, Sotho, Indian, Afrikaans and those of British origin. The scars left by the apartheid years are slowly healing, but have left huge inequalities between rich and poor. Despite this, the people are charming hosts, most speak English and all have a fascinating story to tell. The crime rate is still far too high, but with a little common sense, travellers can have a perfect, safe holiday.

  • Sterkfontein Caves
Visit the stamping ground of some of our oldest ancestors at the spectacular Sterkfontein Caves. With seriously old humanoid remains - including the skull known as "Mrs Ples", thought to be at least two million years old - this area of South Africa has become known as the "cradle of humankind" and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The Hydro
The Hydro Spa - also known as the High Rustenberg Health Hydro - is snuggled in the tranquility of Ida's Valley, just outside Stellenbosch, in the midst of woodlands, magical gardens and crisp mountain air. Opened in 1972 by Cleto Saporetti, recent investment has paid dividends and the spa won four major awards in 2005.
  • Lesedi Cultural Village
Lesedi means "light", and you can discover the warm welcome of four different South African tribes at this hut village in the Bushveld.
  • Cango Caves
Beneath the Swartberg mountain range lie the magnificent Cango Caves. First discovered on 11 July 1780, they are now a very popular attraction along the Garden Route.
  • Wonder Cave
Close to the Sterkfontein Caves, which have revealed early hominid remains that have proved fundamental to our understanding of our species' ancestry, is the Wonder Cave. Estimated to be 2.2 million years old, only recently - since 1991 in fact - has the cave been open to visitors, who can view its remarkable stalagtites and stalagmites.
