The Hydro Spa - also known as the High Rustenberg Health Hydro - is snuggled in the tranquility of Ida's Valley, just outside Stellenbosch, in the midst of woodlands, magical gardens and crisp mountain air. Opened in 1972 by Cleto Saporetti, recent investment has paid dividends and the spa won four major awards in 2005.
The Hydro has everything you could want to treat the mind, body and soul, and follows a simple yet workable philosophy of health based on the practice of naturopathy - the healing power of nature. In short, this holistic approach aims to restore balance through living and eating habits. Many problems can be tackled this way - whether physical, mental or spiritual.
Guests are given a combination of personalised diet, structural manipulation, hydrotherapy, nutrition and lifestyle counselling, relaxation therapies and other natural methods. There are a number of programmes to choose from - ranging from the three-day Anti-Stress to the ten-day Classical Health. They often change as more techniques and ideas are introduced - so please contact the centre for the latest. Most days include a full body massage, sauna or steam, hydrotherapy, exercise and lecture and workshop sessions.
Naturally, great emphasis is placed on diet - cleansing the system and giving the body a decent respite from modern living. Personal consultants guide all guests, who are able to select their choice of either the "balanced" or "elimination detoxification" diet. Both emphasise (you guessed it) fresh fruit and a varied selection of mainly raw vegetables and salads. But at least these are a cut above typical supermarket fare - local produce in South Africa is awesome.
