Fes is the most ancient of the Imperial Capitals, and an archaeological gem as it is the most complete medieval city of the Arab world. This is a place that stimulates your senses, sounds, smells and amazing visual details. More than any other city in Morocco, it seems to exist in a time somewhere between the Middle Ages and the twenty-first century. It is divided into a modern part and an ancient part: the French-built Ville Nouvelle (modern as the name implies) and a quarter or so of Fes's 800,000 inhabitants continue to live in the ancient Medina-city of Fes El Bali, where apart from the existence of electricity and tourists, nothing much has changed since ancient times.
